A View of the Panasonic Viera TX-P42X10 TV

By Harvey Underwood

The Panasonic TX-P42X10 is one of the latest flat screen televisions from Panasonic. Although only a step above Panasonic's range of entry level large flat televisions, this has some respectable additions and features that you would often only find with more expensive televisions. It is also a plasma screen rather than an LCD.

With a wide screen aspect ratio and 42 inches viewing size, the TX-P42X10 is about as big as you would want for watching movies. Although slightly bulkier than other televisions of its size, it does come with a wide array of features which make it a very attractive option if you are considering buying a decent quality centrepiece for your new home cinema system.

Most notably, the Panasonic TX-P42X10 has a refresh rate of 100 Hz. Most competing TVs only have a refresh rate of half of that but if this doesn't mean anything to you, basically 100 Hz means there is going to be a lot less flickering. To put it simply, the higher refresh rate, but the higher the potential frame rate meaning that it'll be easier on your eyes and playback will appear a lot smoother.

Since it is only just above the budget range of large flat screen televisions, you don't get some are the features that you'll find in models which are much more expensive. While the Panasonic Viera TX-P42X10 is ready to play all the latest high definition content, it does not have the highest resolution to playback the latest Bluray disks at their native resolution. Nonetheless, this is very unlikely to be a problem for anyone but the most demanding of consumers.

With the ability to help minimise flickering in being a lot easier on your eyes, the 100 Hz refresh rate is definitely a defining point in the decision of whether or not you should buy the TX-P42X10. Panasonic also deploys is revolutionary technology which allows the screen to be far more versatile than many competing models. That is to say, the screen will automatically alter its contrast settings depending on the light in the room to make it look better.

Another very welcome feature to the TX-P42X10 in addition to all its normal connectivity options that you would expect, is the addition of an SD card reader. This means that you can simply take the SD card out of any digital camera, slot it into the screen and view your images immediately without having to worry about messing around with any cables.

The TX-P42X10 also has some pretty impressive built in audio capabilities but to be honest, if you are spending this sort of money on a screen, you probably want to upgrade to a decent surround sound speakers system anyway which are render the built in speakers obsolete. Nonetheless, it is a welcome addition if you are short on space.

In conclusion, the Panasonic Viera TX-P42X10 is a good all round performer. You also don't have to worry about the disadvantages of LCD such as a generally lower viewing angle.
