Information On Why Vehicles Need Car Tracking Systems

By Fiona Hunt

Car tracking systems are utilized as a management tool by many businesses, particularly those with a large number of vehicles on the road at any one time. By installing an electronic device usually referred to as a GPS into a vehicle the owner can use computer software to find out exactly where a vehicle is and the route it has traveled.

Demand has seen the development of several brands of tracking devices. In general, they were originally split into either passive or active systems. However, continuing developments has seen the introduction of dual systems. The use of cellular and satellite networks has led to further improvements in the operation of more up to date car tracking systems.

Passive devices are usually triggered by a specific action such as the ignition key being turned to start the engine or a vehicle door being opened. The device records the time and the vehicles movements until the engine is switched off or the driver opens the door to get out. The device can then either be removed and the data downloaded to a computer, or the data can be transferred via a wireless download.

Active GPS devices collect the same type of information, but transfer the data by using a cellular or satellite network in real time to a computer at the drivers base. Using this method the information on the location of a vehicle at any given time is accurate and indicates if the vehicle is moving or stationery.

Private vehicle owners are not the only ones to become aware of the advantages of having a tracking system added to their vehicle. Many transport companies have added them to their buses. They can then provide real time information on arrivals and departures at bus stops and operate recorded messages advising of timetable changes. Access to the information collated from GPS devices allows the bus operator to improve their services.

GPS devices are very quickly becoming a standard installation in newer vehicles. They are particularly useful when used in high end motors that are a prime target for motor thieves. Tracking systems allow the Police to quickly find and retrieve stolen vehicle using a GPS locator.

There is a demand from motorists for even more sophisticated GPS car tracking systems. The most recent that has come onto the market, not only allowed the vehicles movements to be tracked, but allow the owner to remotely control their vehicle doors and engine. This is obviously a real theft deterrent and can also be beneficial in helping drivers to obtain cheaper vehicle insurance.
