The Sharp UX-CD 600 Communications Center With Sharp UX-CD 600 Toner

By Ben Pate

The Sharp UX-CD 600 Communications Center is (1) a fax machine, (2) a text-only copy machine, (3) an expandable two-line multi-user phone console and (4) an answering machine; all rolled up into one compact unit. This system was introduced to the market in 2003 as a small office - home office (SOHO) space saving solution. It uses Sharp UX CD600 toner.

The unit was targeted at the SOHO market, with the emphasis on the HO portion of that particular acronym (Home Office). Several thousand UX-CD 600 Communications Centers are still in daily operation, so Sharp UX-CD 600 Toner is still available, either from Sharp or from non-OEM suppliers of toner.

The fax has 448 KB of memory, which is sufficient to hold as many as 24 legal size pages of text. A design fault to be aware of is that faxes come in paper side down. Many users have complained that you can't tell if a fax has come in simply by give the machine a glance in passing. But other than that, the center is well thought of by most users.

The input paper tray has a 50 sheet maximum, which some users find is annoyingly little, but it surprisingly has an automatic feed tray that can handle up to 10 pages and letter as well as legal size (81/2' X 13') paper. The copier function can be set to run up to 99 copies, which is kind of weird given that the paper tray can only handle half that much. Copy quality isn't bad, at 392 lines per inch resolution.

The UX-CD 600 Communications Center has a cord handset on the unit itself and comes with a 2.4GHz cordless phone (and charging base). The Center can handle up to 7 additional cordless lines, but they have to all be 2.4 Gig spread spectrum types. As you can see, this is a clever design - using the UX-CD 600 Communications Center as the hub for a cordless phone network.

The cordless phone system integrated with the Sharp UX-CD 600 Communications Center is 2.4 GHz. If expanding the system, all added cordless phone sets must also be spread spectrum digital 2.4 GHz models. The one they include has a great range. Users report it operates with no drop out in clarity at distances of 75 and 80 feet. Like most high quality cordless phones with portable chargers, the handset can deliver 8 hours of talk time. It can also hold a charge when off the cradle for up to two days. The low battery light on the handset is nice.

The Sharp UX-CD 600 Communications Center is compatible with Caller ID and Call Waiting services if you subscribe to them from your service provider. There is also a duplex speaker in the base, allowing you to communicate hands free when using the base station handset. Conference calling is not something that this console enables and, as far as I can determine, it can't handle 3 Way Calling either. This is a major disappointment for most prospective buyers. Always use Sharp UX CD600 toner with this product.
