About the Magellan Roadmate GPS

By Alexis Kenne

Ferdinand Magellan is hailed in history books as the first explorer to circumnavigate the world. He achieved this feat in the 16th century under Spain's rule. Since then, the name Magellan has been associated with navigation in nations across the globe. It's no wonder, then, that there is a global tracking firm named after this important explorer. It's also no wonder that the Magellan Roadmate line of GPS units includes an array of user-friendly features to make navigation simple.

The Magellan Roadmate series consists of several models of handheld GPS devices for the North American continent including the United States. Each one has ease of use through their interactive displays that are so simple to understand, you really don't even need to read the directions! The common features include six million points of interest (POI). With these points, you can click on the icon and the GPS will give you directions, including which exit to take, as well as other helpful information about the locations. POIs include gas stations, hotels, ATMs that are searchable by category, name, and city or nearest to your position.

There are other commonalities listed below. Home icon will allow you to program any location to become your home base. QuickSpell? is an intelligence within the Magellan Roadmate GPS system that will check your spelling as you type, and can search addresses and points of interests for you in a matter of a few keystrokes. SayWhere? is the text-to-speech feature that is able to tell you street names and turn-by-turn directions as you travel on your journey. SmartDetour? and Auto re-route are two of the greatest features when it comes to heavy traffic or road closures due to construction or an accident. The Magellan Roadmate can tell you how to avoid these ugly situations and will recalculate your routes as you turn off in other directions to always keep you on track! Auto NightView? is a nifty feature of the LCD display that will allow the Magellan Roadmate to automatically adjust color and contrast for low light or no light situations. Address Books are available on all of the Roadmate GPS systems. You will be able to save recurring information on your trips so there is no need to continually look up the same POI.

There are other terrific features, as well, that are not common among all models. The Roadmate 1430 also includes a tow truck icon that will indicate your precise location so that tow trucks can easily find you when you have an emergency. A 2D and 3D view is available for you location on the 1430, 1400, and 1200 models. Each Magellan Roadmate comes loaded with very detailed maps for the countries of North America, plus Hawaii and Puerto Rico. The precision is down to within three meters to your location at any given time with the rechargeable batteries operating for three hours before a recharge is needed. Customizable routes are a reality with the Magellan Roadmate GPS, and some models allow up to twenty locations loaded at a time!

Users of the Magellan Roadmate GPS enjoy the flexibility and detailed information provided in these sleek, compact models that can be taken anywhere. With standard accessories, they can even be attached to the dashboard or the window. These models have flexible volume control so you can hear even in noisy situations, and the volume will come back down when all is quiet again. You can even download additional maps of the UK and a variety of European countries too. Whether you use it for every day navigation, day trips, or longer road trips, The Magellan Roadmate GPS is an incredible buy.
