By Daniel Stouffer

Our friend the automobile has transitioned over the last couple of decades from a standard workhorse to a provider of luxury, comfort and ease. Technological chances have opened a wealth of options to assist us with our needs. Our journey is made much more efficient as wireless communication technology allows us to use a global positioning system.

Originally designed for the Armed Forces, the global positioning system (GPS) is now a fantastic navigational aid and GPS for cars has become quite sophisticated. In basic form the device helps to search for particular locations on a map.

GPS for cars works by monitoring a number of dedicated satellites high above the Earth's orbit. 24 different satellites revolve around the globe twice per day and the satellites are monitored by ground stations at various locations. These ground stations basically verify and monitor signals and messages from the satellites. Once the data is verified, it can be received by receivers installed within each vehicle.

Software installed within GPS for cars interprets the signal from the satellite. According to the location of the satellite and the time that the signal takes to reach the receiver, the actual position of the vehicle can be determined. The high degree of accuracy is determined according to triangulation " with three satellites used to pinpoint the location. An even higher level of accuracy is guaranteed by the use of atomic clock synchronization between the satellite and the GPS system.

GPS for cars is very popular and this is no surprise. The technology helps us in several different areas. Firstly, we wish to find the optimum route to our destination within our very complex road network and this information is supplied to us as we drive. Nobody seems to have enough time for anything these days and we are able to get an accurate calculation of the amount of time needed during our drive.
