CCNA Virtual Lab - Pros and Cons of Using A Router Simulator For Your CCNA Preparation

By Francis Teo

Cisco introduced simulation type questions into the CCNA exam, and since then it has become crucial that CCNA candidates have some practice on configuring Cisco devices before attempting the test. This is because the simulations probably carry a large number of points for score computational purposes. There are 2 well known ways to get this practice - get some used Cisco equipment or hope that you employer has a lab you can practice on.

The 3rd option is to use a CCNA virtual lab product. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of using a CCNA virtual lab for your exam preparation.

Why You Should Use One

1. Portability - By installing the simulator on a laptop, you are able to put in practice hours where ever and when ever you feel like it. For a home lab, you are able to only do this if you are physically close to your home lab.

2. Low cost - Cisco router packages can get very expensive and can cost $1000 or more, depending on your choice of equipment. CCNA virtual labs are much cheaper, costing only $100 to $150. This is a more cost effective option.

3. Included Lab Exercises - The virtual lab products usually provide guided exercises together with the simulation to help you master the required topics for the CCNA. It's like having an instructor there with you to guide you along.

4. Supplementary material to books - If you know which package to get, you will end up with a comprehensive package for your CCNA preparation. This is because the virtual lab is usually written to follow the syllabus of certain books and the lab and the book usually refer to each other.

Why You Should Not Use One

1. Not a full simulation - The simulator might have problems simulating the full set of Cisco IOS commands and does not really function as a real router or switch. It only supports all the commands you are required to know for the CCNA exam.

2. Limited Usage - If you are intending to study further and take the CCNP exams, the limited set of commands will not be enough, and you will have to purchase a real CCNP lab for practice in future.
